Gender Equality Policy at the University of Bonn
At the University of Bonn, gender equality is a priority objective in all areas and an essential part of university management. The rectorate, the Central Gender Equality Officer and the advisory committees all work towards fulfilling the gender equality objectives stated in § 3 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (English paraphrase):
As part of their duties, the institutions of higher education encourage the realization of equal opportunities for women and men in higher education and work towards eliminating the disadvantages presently faced by women. In considering proposals and making decisions, institutions must always take account of the gender-specific consequences (gender mainstreaming). Institutions of higher education make adequate provision for the diversity of their members (diversity management) as well as the legitimate interest of their staff in good terms of employment.
Among the central tasks relating to gender equality at the University of Bonn are: increasing the percentage of women professors, supporting women early-career researchers, increasing the percentage of women students in STEM subjects, making women scientists’ achievements (more) visible, as well as the development and implementation of measures designed to increase the compatibility of science, studying, career and family.
Responsibilities and Objectives
The Gender Equality Office is committed to establishing gender equality across the University and supports those affected by gender-based or sexualized discrimination.
Gender Equality at the Faculties
The Gender Equality Officers of the Faculties function as the Central Gender Equality Officer's deputies in their respective departments and work closely with her.
Gender Equality for Students
The Central Gender Equality Officer's student deputy works towards establishing gender equality for students of all disciplines.
Gender Equality Commission
The Gender Equality Commission advises and supports the University and the Central Gender Equality Officer in implementing gender equality.
Gender Equality Plans
On the basis of the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia, the University of Bonn develops gender equality plans in order to establish greater equality of opportunities between different genders at the University.
