In this workshop participants will learn how to understand German academic culture, navigate cultural expectations within a research setting, and build strategies for positive intercultural interactions. We consider the peculiarities of relationships with supervisors, colleagues and the university administration in Germany, and advice is given on roles, responsibilities, and professional conduct. Another theme to be discussed is the impact of culture shock in order to explore ways to mitigate its effects.
Through group interaction the participants will learn methods for reflecting on their experiences in an intercultural academic setting. We will consider the particular challenges faced by international students. There will be the opportunity to explore specific personal challenges.
